Microsoft Reserved Instance and the extended trade-in period
30-10-2023 09:16Azure Reserved Instance The Azure Reserved Instance (RI) is indeed reserved capacity. If you would purchase a D16 v3 ‘VM’ as a three-year RI, you do get the right to deploy any combination of D-v3 series VMs up to 16 vCPU (virtual cores). A combination of one VM with 10 vCPU and another VM with 6 vCPU (both in D-v3 series) is eligible. This features is called ‘automatic sizing’. Once you deploy a VM outside of D-v3 series, or in another datacenter region, or above the 16 vCPU commitment, it will appear as ‘pay as you go’ charge on your Azure invoice at the end of the month. Good to know, Reservations is all about ‘compute’. If you deploy your VM with Microsoft Windows Server as the operating system, you do have to license that separately (for saving money, use Azure Hybrid Benefits).
